Frame Restoration

Structural consolidation and aesthetic restoration of gilded and carved frames. Services include gesso consolidation, fill and modeling of missing ornament, re-gilding, and surface integration, with written condition documentation on every project.

Overview

Frames are integral to the presentation and protection of fine art, and historic gilded frames carry their own significant value. Frame restoration addresses structural failures in the wood substrate, losses and damage to the gesso ground, deterioration of gilded surfaces, and the accumulated effects of cleaning attempts that have stripped or abraded original surfaces. Our treatments follow the same reversibility standards applied to paintings.

Common Needs

  • Missing or damaged gesso ornament requiring fill and modeling
  • Flaking and lifting gesso layers requiring consolidation
  • Water damage causing swelling, warping, or gesso loss
  • Worn, abraded, or missing gilding
  • Structural breaks and detached corner joints
  • Previous repairs using inappropriate fills or gold paint cover-ups

Documentation Provided

  • Condition report noting gilding type, technique, and losses
  • Pre- and post-treatment photographs
  • Treatment record with all materials specified

Who This Serves

Historic frames are frequently damaged alongside the paintings they house during water, fire, and transit incidents. Our documentation addresses frame damage separately from the painting, providing the granular line-item detail that insurance claims often require.
